Seeking Jesus first is not a one-time decision you make and then never have to revisit.
If you want a wider devotional rhythm, daily devotionals to seek Jesus first gives you another way to keep returning to Jesus.
If you want a wider devotional rhythm, 7-day seek God first devotional gives you another way to keep returning to Jesus.
For mornings when you need a simpler starting point, the morning devotional rhythm helps you begin with Jesus before the day gets loud.
It is a daily return.
Some mornings, your heart may feel ready. You wake up with peace, open your Bible, and want to pray.
Other mornings, your mind is already busy. Your responsibilities feel loud. Your emotions feel scattered. Your worries start speaking before you have even had a quiet moment with God.
And there are days when you do not feel spiritual at all.
You feel tired.
Distracted.
Behind.
Dry.
Weak.
Maybe even far from God.
But the beautiful thing about seeking Jesus first is this: it does not begin with your strength.
It begins with His invitation.
Jesus still says, “Come.”
Come when you are weary.
Come when you are anxious.
Come when you are unsure.
Come when you have drifted.
Come when you do not know what to say.
Come when all you have is a small, honest prayer: “Lord, I need You.”
This 30-day devotional is written to help you return to Jesus one day at a time. Not through pressure. Not through religious performance. Not through trying to prove that you are a good Christian.
But through relationship.
Surrender.
Trust.
Grace.
Obedience.
And a daily choice to place Jesus back at the center.
You do not need to rush through this. Let each day become a quiet meeting place with the Lord. Read the Scripture. Sit with the devotional thought. Pray honestly. Reflect slowly. Then take the small step for that day.
The goal is not to finish perfectly.
The goal is to keep coming back to Jesus.
How to Use This 30-Day Devotional
Each day includes a Scripture reading, a devotional reflection, a prayer, a question for your heart, and a simple practice.
You can read it in the morning as a way to begin with Jesus. You can also read it at night as a way to surrender the day back to Him.
If you miss a day, do not quit.
Just return.
That is part of seeking Jesus first too.
Day 1: Begin Again with Jesus
Scripture Reading
Matthew 6:33 — Jesus teaches us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.
Devotional
The first day of a devotional can feel exciting, but it can also feel heavy if you are already thinking, “I hope I do not fail again.”
Maybe you have started spiritual habits before and stopped.
Maybe you have promised God you would be more consistent, only to find yourself distracted again.
Maybe you want to seek Jesus first, but part of you feels ashamed that He has not always been first.
Take a breath.
This journey does not begin with shame.
It begins with grace.
Jesus is not inviting you into a 30-day performance. He is inviting you into a deeper relationship with Him.
Seeking Jesus first does not mean your life instantly becomes quiet, easy, or perfectly ordered. It means you choose to bring your heart back under His loving lordship. It means before everything else becomes ultimate, Jesus becomes first again.
You are not here to prove yourself.
You are here to return.
Today, begin simply.
Not with a dramatic promise.
Not with pressure to become a completely different person overnight.
Just with one honest surrender: “Jesus, I want You first.”
That is a holy beginning.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I begin again with You. I do not want this to be about pressure or performance. I want to seek You because You are worthy, because I need You, and because my heart belongs with You. Help me put You first today in a simple and sincere way. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
What would it look like for Jesus to have first place in your heart today, not someday?
Today’s Practice
Before you move into your normal routine, pause and pray: “Jesus, be first in me today.”
Day 2: Seek Jesus Before the Noise
Scripture Reading
Psalm 5:3 — David speaks of bringing his prayer before the Lord in the morning and watching expectantly.
Devotional
The world does not wait quietly for your attention.
Messages, responsibilities, news, schedules, worries, and unfinished tasks can rush toward you as soon as the day begins.
Before you know it, your heart is reacting instead of resting.
That is why the first quiet turning of your heart matters.
Seeking Jesus before the noise does not have to mean a long, perfect morning routine. It may be a few quiet minutes. It may be praying while you sit on the edge of the bed. It may be whispering a Scripture while making coffee. It may be opening your Bible before opening your phone.
The point is not the length.
The point is priority.
When you seek Jesus before the noise, you are saying, “Lord, I do not want the loudest thing to lead me. I want You to lead me.”
Noise may still come.
But it does not have to sit on the throne.
Jesus can meet you before the day becomes crowded.
He can steady you before the pressure rises.
He can remind you who you are before the world starts making demands.
Begin with Him.
Not because the day will be perfect.
Because He is worthy of the first place.
Prayer
Jesus, meet me before the noise. Before my thoughts scatter and my responsibilities speak loudly, help me turn toward You. Let Your voice become more important than every other voice. Give me a heart that begins with You. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
What usually gets your attention first in the morning?
Today’s Practice
Choose one small boundary: before checking your phone, give Jesus the first few minutes of your attention.
Day 3: Fix Your Eyes on Jesus
Scripture Reading
Hebrews 12:1-2 — We are called to run with endurance, fixing our eyes on Jesus.
Devotional
Your heart will follow what your eyes keep returning to.
If you keep looking at fear, fear will feel larger.
If you keep looking at comparison, your life will feel smaller.
If you keep looking at your failures, shame will grow louder.
If you keep looking at your circumstances, peace may feel impossible.
But Scripture calls us to fix our eyes on Jesus.
Not glance at Him occasionally.
Not include Him somewhere in the background.
Fix our eyes on Him.
Jesus is not only the One who began your faith. He is the One who sustains it. He is not standing far away, waiting for you to run the race by yourself. He is the author and perfecter of your faith.
That means your spiritual life is not held together by your ability to stay strong.
It is held together by Him.
When your eyes drift, return.
When your mind spirals, return.
When your heart feels divided, return.
Look again at Jesus — crucified, risen, faithful, patient, holy, near.
You may not be able to control everything you face today, but you can ask the Holy Spirit to help you keep turning your gaze back to Christ.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, my attention is easily pulled in many directions. Help me fix my eyes on You today. When fear, comparison, pressure, or shame tries to lead me, bring my heart back to You. You are my Savior, my Shepherd, and my strength. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
What has been holding your attention more than Jesus lately?
Today’s Practice
When you feel distracted or overwhelmed, pause and say: “Jesus, I look to You again.”
Day 4: Choose the Better Part
Scripture Reading
Luke 10:38-42 — Mary sits at Jesus’ feet while Martha is distracted by much serving.
Devotional
Martha was not doing something evil.
She was serving.
She was working.
She was taking responsibility.
And yet, Jesus gently exposed something in her heart: she was anxious and troubled about many things.
That can happen to us too.
Even good things can pull us away from the best thing.
Serving God can become a way to avoid sitting with God.
Doing things for Jesus can become easier than being with Jesus.
Productivity can feel safer than intimacy.
Mary chose the better part because she sat at His feet and listened.
She was not wasting time.
She was receiving what her soul needed most.
Seeking Jesus first means we learn to stop treating time with Him as optional, secondary, or less important than everything else.
Your responsibilities matter.
Your work matters.
Your family matters.
Your service matters.
But none of them can replace the place of being with Jesus.
Today, Jesus is not shaming you for being busy.
He is inviting you out of anxious distraction and back into His presence.
Choose the better part.
Sit with Him.
Listen again.
Prayer
Jesus, I confess that I can be busy, distracted, and anxious about many things. Help me choose the better part. Teach me not only to work for You, but to be with You. Quiet my heart enough to listen. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
Have good responsibilities been crowding out your time with Jesus?
Today’s Practice
Set aside ten quiet minutes today to sit with Jesus without multitasking.
Day 5: Abide Before You Strive
Scripture Reading
John 15:4-5 — Jesus teaches that apart from Him we can do nothing.
Devotional
A branch does not produce fruit by trying harder to be a branch.
It bears fruit by staying connected to the vine.
That is one of the most freeing truths Jesus gives us.
Much of our spiritual exhaustion comes from trying to produce fruit while living disconnected from Him.
We try to be patient without abiding.
We try to be loving without receiving His love.
We try to overcome temptation through willpower alone.
We try to serve from an empty soul.
We try to grow by pressure instead of presence.
Jesus does not say, “Try harder apart from Me.”
He says, “Abide in Me.”
Abiding means remaining. Staying. Depending. Living connected. Bringing your inner life to Him, not just your public behavior.
Seeking Jesus first means you stop treating Him as fuel for your agenda and begin receiving Him as your life.
Before you strive today, abide.
Before you force fruit, stay close to the Vine.
Fruit comes from connection.
And connection begins with surrender.
Prayer
Jesus, I confess that I often try to grow, serve, and carry life in my own strength. Teach me to abide in You. Keep me close to Your heart. Let my obedience, love, patience, and faithfulness flow from life with You. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
Where have you been striving instead of abiding?
Today’s Practice
Before beginning an important task, pause and pray: “Jesus, I cannot do this fruitfully apart from You.”
Day 6: Let Grace Lead You Back
Scripture Reading
Romans 8:1 — There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Devotional
Condemnation does not lead you closer to Jesus.
It drives you into hiding.
It tells you that you are too inconsistent, too weak, too far behind, too disappointing, too much of a failure to come near God again.
But condemnation is not the voice of Jesus.
The Holy Spirit convicts, but He does not crush.
Conviction says, “Come into the light. God is calling you back.”
Condemnation says, “Hide. There is no hope for you.”
If you are in Christ, your failures are real, but they are not final. Your sins must be brought to the Lord, but they do not get to define your identity. Your weakness is not a reason to run from Jesus. It is a reason to run to Him.
Seeking Jesus first means letting grace lead you back quickly.
Not after you punish yourself enough.
Not after you feel worthy again.
Not after you promise never to struggle again.
Now.
Come back now.
Jesus is not asking you to pretend nothing happened. He is inviting you to return honestly, repent sincerely, and receive mercy deeply.
Grace is not permission to drift.
Grace is the way home.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me recognize the difference between Your conviction and the enemy’s condemnation. When I fail, teach me to run to You instead of hiding. Thank You that there is no condemnation for those who are in You. Lead me back by grace. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
Where have you been hiding because of shame?
Today’s Practice
Bring one specific failure, fear, or regret to Jesus honestly. Receive His mercy instead of rehearsing condemnation.
Day 7: Receive New Mercy Today
Scripture Reading
Lamentations 3:22-23 — God’s mercies are new every morning.
Devotional
Yesterday may have been messy.
You may have been impatient.
You may have worried more than you prayed.
You may have spoken harshly, drifted into distraction, or ignored the gentle leading of God.
But today is not empty of mercy.
God’s mercy is not fragile.
It does not run out because yesterday was weak.
It is new this morning.
That does not mean yesterday did not matter. It means yesterday does not have the power to cancel God’s faithfulness.
Seeking Jesus first today may begin with receiving mercy before trying to do better.
Many believers try to improve without first receiving grace. They wake up ashamed and immediately start making spiritual promises.
“I will do better.”
“I will try harder.”
“I will not mess up again.”
But the heart needs mercy before it needs a plan.
Let Jesus meet you here.
Let Him wash the shame from your soul.
Let Him remind you that His faithfulness is greater than your inconsistency.
Then rise and follow Him today.
Not because you are flawless.
Because His mercy is new.
Prayer
Father, thank You for mercy that is new today. I bring You yesterday’s weakness and today’s need. Help me receive Your faithfulness before I try to fix myself. Let Your mercy give me courage to seek Jesus first again. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
Are you carrying yesterday’s failure into today as if God has no new mercy for you?
Today’s Practice
Say this slowly: “God’s mercy is new for me today.” Let that truth become your first thought when shame rises.
Day 8: Trust Jesus with What You Cannot Understand
Scripture Reading
Proverbs 3:5-6 — We are called to trust the Lord and not lean on our own understanding.
Devotional
Some seasons do not make sense while you are living through them.
You pray, but nothing seems to move.
You obey, but the path still feels unclear.
You wait, but the waiting stretches longer than you expected.
You try to understand what God is doing, but the pieces do not fit.
Seeking Jesus first does not mean you always understand Him.
It means you trust Him above your understanding.
That is not blind denial. It is faith rooted in the character of God.
Your understanding is limited.
God’s wisdom is not.
Your view is partial.
His vision is complete.
Your heart may be overwhelmed by what is happening now.
Jesus sees the whole story.
Trusting Him does not always remove the questions, but it gives your questions a safe place to rest.
You can ask.
You can weep.
You can admit confusion.
But you do not have to make your understanding the foundation of your peace.
Jesus can be your foundation even when life feels unclear.
Today, you may not receive every answer.
But you can still take one step of trust.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I do not understand everything You are doing. Some parts of my life feel confusing and unresolved. Help me trust You more than my own understanding. Lead me, steady me, and teach me to acknowledge You in all my ways. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
What are you trying to understand before you are willing to trust God?
Today’s Practice
Name one unanswered question before Jesus and pray: “I trust You even here.”
Day 9: Bring Every Worry to Him
Scripture Reading
Philippians 4:6-7 — Bring everything to God in prayer, and His peace will guard your heart and mind in Christ.
Devotional
Worry often feels productive.
It feels like you are doing something.
Turning the problem over and over in your mind can feel like control. Imagining every possible outcome can feel like preparation. Rehearsing what might go wrong can feel responsible.
But worry cannot carry what only God can carry.
Seeking Jesus first means you bring your worries to Him before worry becomes your refuge.
God does not tell you to pray because your concerns are silly.
He tells you to pray because He is near.
Every worry can become an invitation.
An invitation to talk to Him.
An invitation to surrender control.
An invitation to remember that peace is not found in knowing every outcome, but in being held by Christ.
Paul says the peace of God guards hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
That means peace is not only a feeling.
It is a guard.
It stands watch where fear has been trying to break in.
Today, do not wait until your anxiety is gone to pray.
Pray with the anxiety in your hands.
Bring it all to Jesus.
Again and again if needed.
Prayer
Jesus, I bring You every worry I have been carrying. I confess that I often rehearse my fears more than I release them to You. Teach me to pray honestly and trust deeply. Let Your peace guard my heart and mind today. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
What worry have you been thinking about more than praying about?
Today’s Practice
Write one worry down. Then pray over it specifically and surrender it to Jesus.
Day 10: Cast Your Cares, Not Your Confidence
Scripture Reading
1 Peter 5:7 — We are invited to cast our anxieties on God because He cares for us.
Devotional
There is a tender reason God invites you to cast your cares on Him.
Because He cares for you.
Not because you are dramatic.
Not because you are weak.
Not because He is tired of hearing about your burdens.
Because He cares.
Sometimes we think God only wants our polished prayers. The ones that sound calm, spiritual, and full of faith.
But Peter says to cast your anxieties on Him.
That includes the messy ones.
The repeated ones.
The ones you are embarrassed to still be carrying.
The ones that come back after you thought you had surrendered them.
Seeking Jesus first means you do not cast away your confidence when you cast your cares.
You do not throw your faith away because you feel anxious.
You bring the anxiety to the Father who cares.
You can say, “Lord, I am carrying this again.”
And His response is not rejection.
It is invitation.
Give it to Me.
Not because the burden is small.
Because His care is great.
Prayer
Father, thank You that You care for me. Help me stop carrying anxieties You invite me to cast on You. When I feel weak or embarrassed by my worries, remind me that You are compassionate and near. I give these cares to You again. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
Do you believe God cares about the specific burdens you carry?
Today’s Practice
Open your hands as you pray and imagine releasing one care to the Lord.
Day 11: Let His Peace Rule
Scripture Reading
Colossians 3:15 — Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.
Devotional
Many things compete to rule your heart.
Fear wants to rule.
Urgency wants to rule.
People’s opinions want to rule.
Regret wants to rule.
The need to control wants to rule.
But Scripture tells us to let the peace of Christ rule.
That word carries the sense of peace acting like an umpire — helping govern what gets the final say in your heart.
Seeking Jesus first means you do not let every emotion become your master.
You can feel fear without obeying fear.
You can feel pressure without bowing to pressure.
You can feel uncertainty without surrendering your peace to uncertainty.
The peace of Christ is not shallow positivity.
It is rooted in who Jesus is.
He is Lord.
He is risen.
He is present.
He is faithful.
He has overcome the world.
When His peace rules, your circumstances may still be difficult, but they are not ultimate.
Today, ask Jesus to govern the inner room of your heart.
Let His peace have the final word.
Prayer
Jesus, let Your peace rule in my heart today. Do not let fear, pressure, regret, or control have the final say. Remind me that You are Lord over my inner life too. Teach me to live under Your peace. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
What has been trying to rule your heart lately?
Today’s Practice
When you feel inner pressure rising, pause and pray: “Peace of Christ, rule in me.”
Day 12: Be Still Before You Move
Scripture Reading
Psalm 46:10 — Be still and know that He is God.
Devotional
Stillness can feel uncomfortable when you are used to fixing, planning, checking, and controlling.
Sometimes movement feels safer than trust.
If you keep moving, you do not have to feel your fear.
If you keep solving, you do not have to admit your limits.
If you keep rushing, you do not have to wait on God.
But God sometimes invites us into stillness before He gives us the next step.
Not because He is inactive.
Because He is God.
Seeking Jesus first means you learn to pause before reacting.
You learn to stop before forcing.
You learn to quiet your soul before making fear-led decisions.
Stillness is not laziness.
Stillness can be an act of faith.
It says, “God, You are God, and I am not.”
That truth is humbling, but it is also deeply freeing.
You were never meant to hold everything together.
You were never meant to know everything.
You were never meant to carry the whole future in your hands.
Be still.
Not because nothing matters.
Because God is God.
Prayer
Lord, teach me to be still before You. I confess that I often rush, react, and try to control what feels uncertain. Quiet my soul. Remind me that You are God and I am not. Help me rest under Your authority and care. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
Where are you rushing because stillness feels too vulnerable?
Today’s Practice
Spend five minutes in silence before God. Do not try to fix anything. Simply be still with Him.
Day 13: Listen for the Shepherd’s Voice
Scripture Reading
John 10:27 — Jesus says His sheep hear His voice, He knows them, and they follow Him.
Devotional
The voice of Jesus is never careless with your soul.
He may correct you, but He does not shame you.
He may lead you somewhere uncomfortable, but He does not abandon you.
He may call you to surrender, but He does not manipulate you.
He is the Good Shepherd.
Seeking Jesus first means learning to recognize His voice above the noise.
The voice of fear often rushes.
The voice of shame often accuses.
The voice of pride often justifies.
The voice of the world often flatters your desires.
But the Shepherd’s voice leads you in truth, love, holiness, humility, and peace.
He will never contradict His Word.
He will never lead you away from His character.
He will never ask you to sin in order to obey Him.
Listening to Jesus is not about chasing dramatic experiences. It is about becoming attentive to Him through Scripture, prayer, surrender, wise counsel, and the quiet work of the Holy Spirit.
Today, slow down enough to listen.
The Shepherd knows you.
And He is worthy to be followed.
Prayer
Jesus, my Shepherd, help me hear Your voice. Teach me to recognize what comes from You and what does not. Quiet the voices of fear, shame, pride, and confusion. Lead me in truth, and give me a heart willing to follow. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
What voice have you been listening to most lately?
Today’s Practice
Before making a choice today, ask: “Does this lead me closer to the voice and character of Jesus?”
Day 14: Let His Word Light the Next Step
Scripture Reading
Psalm 119:105 — God’s Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.
Devotional
Many times, we want God to light the entire road.
We want the full map.
We want certainty about next month, next year, and the outcome of every decision.
But Scripture describes God’s Word as a lamp to our feet.
A lamp gives enough light for the next step.
Not always the whole journey.
Seeking Jesus first means you learn to let His Word guide you today, even if you do not yet see everything ahead.
The Bible is not just information for your mind. It is light for your path.
It shows you what is true when your emotions are loud.
It reveals God’s character when circumstances confuse you.
It corrects you when your heart drifts.
It comforts you when you are weary.
It teaches you how to follow Jesus in real life.
You do not need to master the whole Bible in one day.
But you do need its light.
Open the Word humbly.
Ask the Holy Spirit to make it alive in you.
Then take the next step Jesus shows you.
Prayer
Lord, let Your Word light my path today. I do not need to see everything ahead if You are leading me. Give me humility to receive Your truth, courage to obey it, and faith to take the next step. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
Have you been looking for guidance while neglecting God’s Word?
Today’s Practice
Read one short passage slowly. Ask, “Lord, what next step are You showing me?”
Day 15: Ask for Wisdom Without Pretending
Scripture Reading
James 1:5 — If anyone lacks wisdom, they should ask God, who gives generously.
Devotional
You do not have to pretend you know what to do.
That is good news.
Sometimes we put pressure on ourselves to appear certain, mature, and spiritually strong. We think we should already know the answer. We feel embarrassed that we still need guidance.
But Scripture gives a simple invitation: if you lack wisdom, ask God.
Not impress God.
Not hide your confusion.
Ask.
Seeking Jesus first means bringing your lack to Him without shame.
God is not threatened by your need for wisdom. He is generous.
He knows the decisions that weigh on you.
He knows the motives you cannot fully sort out.
He knows the difference between what looks good and what is good.
He knows how to lead you in a way that forms your heart, not just fixes your circumstances.
Wisdom is more than information.
Wisdom is seeing life in the light of God.
So ask Him.
Ask before the conversation.
Ask before the commitment.
Ask before the response.
Ask before you rush.
You are not weak for needing wisdom.
You are wise when you know you need God.
Prayer
Father, I lack wisdom, and I come to You honestly. I do not want to pretend I know what to do. Give me wisdom that is pure, humble, and aligned with Your will. Lead me in the way of Jesus. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
Where do you need God’s wisdom right now?
Today’s Practice
Before making one decision today, pause and ask God for wisdom out loud.
Day 16: Let Jesus Renew Your Mind
Scripture Reading
Romans 12:2 — Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Devotional
Your thoughts shape how you see God, yourself, others, and your circumstances.
That is why the renewal of the mind matters so deeply.
Some thoughts may feel normal because you have carried them for years.
“I am alone.”
“I will never change.”
“God is disappointed in me.”
“I have to control everything.”
“If I fail, I am finished.”
But not every familiar thought is true.
Seeking Jesus first means allowing Him to confront the lies you have learned to live with.
The renewing of the mind is not pretending everything is fine. It is bringing your inner world under the truth of God.
What does Jesus say?
What does Scripture reveal?
What is true because of the gospel?
You are not condemned in Christ.
You are not abandoned.
You are not beyond grace.
You are not called to carry life alone.
You are being transformed.
Renewal often happens slowly, but it is real.
Each time you reject a lie and receive God’s truth, your mind is being re-formed around Christ.
Let Jesus renew you today.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, renew my mind. Show me the lies I have believed and replace them with Your truth. Transform the way I think, respond, and see my life. Let my mind become more surrendered to You. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
What thought pattern needs to be renewed by the truth of Jesus?
Today’s Practice
Write down one lie you have believed. Under it, write one truth from Scripture that answers it.
Day 17: Walk by the Spirit
Scripture Reading
Galatians 5:16 — Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Devotional
Following Jesus is not something you can do by willpower alone.
You need the Holy Spirit.
It is easy to reduce the Christian life to trying harder: be more patient, stop being anxious, love better, forgive faster, resist temptation, pray more, do more.
But the New Testament does not call us to self-powered Christianity.
It calls us to life in the Spirit.
Walking by the Spirit means dependence.
Moment by moment.
Step by step.
It means you ask for help before reacting in anger.
You listen for conviction before justifying yourself.
You surrender temptation before entertaining it.
You rely on God’s strength instead of trusting your flesh.
Seeking Jesus first means you do not just admire His ways. You yield to His Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is not an abstract idea. He is God present with you, leading you into truth, forming Christlike character in you, and empowering obedience from the inside out.
Today, do not only ask, “What should I do?”
Ask, “Holy Spirit, how are You leading me?”
Then walk with Him.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, lead me today. I do not want to live by my flesh, reactions, fears, or pride. Teach me to walk with You in the ordinary moments. Form the character of Jesus in me. Help me yield instead of striving in my own strength. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
Where do you need to depend on the Holy Spirit instead of your own willpower?
Today’s Practice
Before responding to a difficult situation, pause and pray: “Holy Spirit, lead me.”
Day 18: Set Your Heart on Things Above
Scripture Reading
Colossians 3:1-2 — Set your heart and mind on things above, where Christ is.
Devotional
Your heart can become crowded with earthly things.
Not all of them are wrong.
Work matters.
Family matters.
Responsibilities matter.
Plans matter.
But when earthly concerns become ultimate, your heart becomes heavy.
You begin living as if this world has the final word.
Seeking Jesus first lifts your eyes.
Not to escape real life, but to see real life under the lordship of Christ.
Christ is risen.
Christ is seated above.
Christ is your life.
That truth changes how you carry today.
Your worth is not defined by achievement.
Your peace is not dependent on perfect circumstances.
Your future is not held by human approval.
Your life is hidden with Christ in God.
To set your heart on things above is to remember what is eternal while you live faithfully in what is temporary.
It is to let heaven reorder your priorities.
It is to ask, “Jesus, what matters most to You here?”
Today, lift your eyes.
Your life is bigger than what is pressing on you right now.
Prayer
Jesus, lift my heart above the things that have been consuming me. Help me live today with eternity in view. Reorder my desires, priorities, and thoughts around You. Let my life be shaped by what matters to You. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
What earthly concern has become too ultimate in your heart?
Today’s Practice
Pause once today and ask: “In light of Jesus and eternity, what matters most right now?”
Day 19: Come to Jesus When You Are Weary
Scripture Reading
Matthew 11:28-30 — Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to Him and find rest.
Devotional
Jesus does not shame weary people for being weary.
He invites them.
That matters because many of us feel guilty for being tired.
Tired of carrying responsibilities.
Tired of waiting.
Tired of fighting the same battles.
Tired of trying to be strong.
Tired of feeling spiritually dry.
But Jesus does not say, “Fix yourself, then come.”
He says, “Come to Me.”
Seeking Jesus first when you are weary may look different than seeking Him when you feel strong.
It may be quieter.
Simpler.
More honest.
Less polished.
And that is okay.
Rest in Jesus is not the same as escaping life. It is being yoked to Him instead of carrying everything alone.
A yoke speaks of walking together.
Jesus is not merely giving you a break. He is inviting you to learn His way.
His way is not frantic.
His way is not crushing.
His way is not performance-driven.
His way is gentle and lowly in heart.
Come weary.
Come burdened.
Come honestly.
Jesus is not far from the tired soul.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I come to You weary. I have carried things in my own strength and tried to keep moving without rest. Teach me Your gentle way. Help me lay down burdens You never asked me to carry alone. Give rest to my soul. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
What burden have you been carrying as if Jesus has not invited you to come?
Today’s Practice
Pray slowly through one burden and imagine placing it in Jesus’ hands.
Day 20: Stop Performing for God
Scripture Reading
Ephesians 2:8-9 — We are saved by grace through faith, not by works.
Devotional
Performance can hide inside spiritual language.
It says, “I just need to be better.”
“I need to prove I am serious.”
“God must be tired of me.”
“I cannot come close until I am more consistent.”
But grace tells a different story.
You are not accepted by God because of your spiritual performance.
You are accepted in Christ.
That does not make obedience unimportant. It makes obedience possible from the right place.
Trying to earn God’s love will exhaust you.
Receiving God’s love will transform you.
Seeking Jesus first means you come to Him as a beloved child, not an anxious employee trying to pass a review.
Your Bible reading does not earn His love.
Your prayers do not purchase His nearness.
Your obedience does not make Him finally willing to care for you.
Jesus has already opened the way.
Grace is not opposed to growth.
Grace is the ground where true growth happens.
Today, lay down the need to impress God.
Let your devotion become response instead of performance.
You are loved in Christ before you accomplish anything today.
Prayer
Jesus, free me from performance. I confess that I often try to earn what You have already given by grace. Teach me to obey from love, not fear. Help me rest in Your finished work and follow You with a sincere heart. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
Where have you been trying to prove yourself to God?
Today’s Practice
Before doing any spiritual habit today, say: “I am not earning God’s love. I am responding to it.”
Day 21: Surrender Control Again
Scripture Reading
Luke 22:42 — Jesus prays, “Not my will, but Yours be done.”
Devotional
Surrender is not always dramatic.
Sometimes it is quiet.
It happens when you stop gripping the outcome.
When you stop forcing the timeline.
When you stop demanding that God explain everything before you trust Him.
When you say, with trembling honesty, “Lord, not my will, but Yours.”
Jesus prayed those words in deep agony, not casual comfort. That means surrender is not pretending something is easy. It is trusting the Father even when obedience costs something.
Seeking Jesus first will always involve surrender because Jesus does not simply want to be included in your life.
He is Lord.
And His lordship reaches your plans, desires, relationships, decisions, ambitions, fears, and future.
The good news is that surrender to Jesus is not surrender to cruelty.
It is surrender to perfect love.
You may not understand His timing.
You may not prefer His process.
You may feel afraid of what surrender will require.
But His will is safer than your control.
Today, bring Him the thing you keep taking back.
Surrender again.
Prayer
Jesus, I surrender control again. I confess that I often want Your blessing while holding tightly to my own will. Teach me to pray honestly, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” Help me trust Your heart even when surrender feels hard. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
What are you still trying to control instead of surrendering to Jesus?
Today’s Practice
Name one area of control and pray: “Jesus, I place this under Your lordship.”
Day 22: Obey the Next Small Thing
Scripture Reading
John 14:15 — Jesus connects love for Him with obedience.
Devotional
Obedience often becomes overwhelming when we imagine the entire road at once.
We think about everything God might ask of us.
Everything we may need to change.
Everything we may need to surrender.
Everything we might lose.
But often, Jesus is calling us to the next faithful step.
Not the whole future at once.
The next yes.
The next apology.
The next act of honesty.
The next boundary.
The next moment of patience.
The next decision to turn away from sin.
The next step of faith.
Seeking Jesus first means love becomes obedience in real life.
Not legalism.
Not earning.
Love.
Jesus is not looking for impressive words that never become surrender. He calls us to follow Him.
And following Him often happens in small, hidden decisions that no one else applauds.
Do not despise the small yes.
A surrendered life is built from many small obediences.
Ask Jesus what the next faithful thing is.
Then do it with Him.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, show me the next small step of obedience. Keep me from delay, fear, and excuses. I do not want to only say that I love You; I want to follow You with my life. Help me obey from love today. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
What is the next small thing Jesus is asking you to obey?
Today’s Practice
Choose one simple act of obedience today and do it quietly, sincerely, and without delay.
Day 23: Follow Jesus When It Costs You
Scripture Reading
Luke 9:23 — Jesus calls His followers to deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow Him.
Devotional
Following Jesus is beautiful, but it is not always comfortable.
There are moments when seeking Him first costs you something.
It may cost approval.
It may cost convenience.
It may cost a desire you have been holding tightly.
It may cost an old pattern you are used to protecting.
It may cost the version of your life you imagined.
Jesus never hid the cost of discipleship. He calls us to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow Him.
Daily.
That word matters.
This is not only one big surrender at the beginning of faith. It is the ongoing life of a disciple.
But the cost of following Jesus must always be seen beside the worth of Jesus.
He is not asking you to lose what is better so you can receive what is worse.
He is calling you away from lesser things into life with Him.
The cross comes before resurrection.
Surrender comes before freedom.
Dying to self makes room for the life of Christ to be seen in you.
Today, if obedience feels costly, do not assume Jesus is being harsh.
He is leading you in the way of life.
Prayer
Jesus, help me follow You even when it costs me. Give me courage to deny myself, take up my cross daily, and walk after You. Remind me that You are worth more than anything I surrender. Make me faithful. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
Where does following Jesus feel costly right now?
Today’s Practice
Identify one comfort, desire, or approval you need to lay down in order to follow Jesus faithfully.
Day 24: Love Jesus More Than Approval
Scripture Reading
Galatians 1:10 — Paul speaks of not living to please people, but to serve Christ.
Devotional
The desire for approval can quietly become a master.
It can shape what you say.
What you hide.
What you post.
What you avoid.
What you compromise.
What you pretend not to believe.
Many believers do not reject Jesus outright. They simply let the fear of people become louder than love for Him.
Seeking Jesus first means His approval becomes weightier than human approval.
That does not mean you become harsh, careless, or proud.
It means you stop letting people sit where only Christ belongs.
You can love people without being ruled by them.
You can listen humbly without needing everyone to agree with you.
You can serve faithfully without being enslaved to praise.
You can obey Jesus even when it is misunderstood.
The approval of people is unstable.
One day they may praise you.
Another day they may question you.
But Jesus is steady.
His love is not fickle.
His lordship is not up for negotiation.
Today, ask Him to free you from living for the eyes of others.
Live before Him.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, free me from being ruled by people’s approval. I want to love others well, but I do not want their opinions to become my master. Teach me to live before You with humility, courage, and sincerity. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
Where are you tempted to compromise because you want approval?
Today’s Practice
Before making a people-pleasing choice, ask: “Am I seeking Jesus first, or approval first?”
Day 25: Seek Jesus in Your Relationships
Scripture Reading
John 13:34-35 — Jesus commands His disciples to love one another as He has loved them.
Devotional
It is possible to talk about seeking Jesus first while ignoring how we treat people.
But Jesus does not separate devotion from love.
He calls His disciples to love as He has loved.
That kind of love is not sentimental only. It is patient, humble, truthful, forgiving, sacrificial, and holy.
Seeking Jesus first in your relationships means you bring your words, reactions, boundaries, forgiveness, and conflicts under His lordship.
You ask, “Jesus, how would You have me love here?”
Sometimes love means speaking gently instead of reacting sharply.
Sometimes love means telling the truth instead of keeping false peace.
Sometimes love means forgiving.
Sometimes love means setting a wise boundary.
Sometimes love means serving quietly.
Sometimes love means repenting for your own pride.
Jesus does not call you to love from an empty heart. He calls you to receive His love and let it shape how you love others.
The way you treat people is part of your devotion.
Today, seek Jesus first not only in private prayer, but in one relationship that needs His grace.
Prayer
Jesus, teach me to love as You have loved me. Bring my relationships under Your lordship. Help me speak with grace, forgive where I need to forgive, repent where I need to repent, and love with truth and humility. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
Which relationship needs to be surrendered to Jesus today?
Today’s Practice
Choose one person and ask Jesus how to love them in a practical, Christlike way today.
Day 26: Seek Jesus in Your Work
Scripture Reading
Colossians 3:23 — Whatever you do, work heartily as for the Lord.
Devotional
Your work matters to Jesus.
Not only ministry work.
Not only visible spiritual service.
The ordinary work too.
The tasks no one notices.
The responsibilities that feel repetitive.
The job that stretches you.
The home duties.
The caregiving.
The studying.
The building.
The serving.
The creating.
Seeking Jesus first does not mean you ignore earthly responsibilities. It means you do them with a heart surrendered to Him.
Work becomes distorted when it becomes your identity, your idol, or your source of worth.
But work becomes worship when it is offered to the Lord.
That does not mean every task will feel inspiring.
It means Jesus can be honored in faithfulness.
He sees what others overlook.
He knows when you choose integrity.
He notices when you serve without applause.
He cares about how you treat people while you work.
He is present in ordinary obedience.
Today, do not separate your work from your walk with Jesus.
Invite Him into it.
Do it for Him.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I give You my work today. Keep me from finding my worth in productivity or approval. Help me work with integrity, humility, excellence, and peace. Let even ordinary tasks become an offering to You. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
How would your work change today if you truly did it for Jesus?
Today’s Practice
Before beginning a task, pray: “Jesus, I offer this to You.”
Day 27: Seek Jesus with Your Time
Scripture Reading
Ephesians 5:15-16 — Walk wisely and make the best use of the time.
Devotional
Time reveals priority.
Not perfectly, because life has seasons and responsibilities we cannot always control.
But over time, how we spend our attention shows what we are seeking.
Many of us do not drift from Jesus through one big decision.
We drift through small daily distractions.
A little scrolling.
A little rushing.
A little procrastinating.
A little postponing prayer.
A little saying, “Later.”
Then later becomes tomorrow.
And tomorrow becomes a pattern.
Seeking Jesus first with your time does not mean every hour is spent in Bible study or prayer. It means your time is brought under His wisdom.
You ask Him to order your day.
You give Him your attention.
You learn to say no to what pulls you away from obedience.
You make room for what nourishes your soul.
Time with Jesus is not wasted time.
It is the place where the rest of your time is reoriented.
Today, ask the Lord to show you where your time needs surrender.
Not so you can feel guilty.
So you can live wisely.
Prayer
Jesus, I give You my time. Show me where distraction, hurry, or misplaced priorities have taken too much room. Teach me to walk wisely and make space for what matters to You. Help me seek You first with my attention and my schedule. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
What is one time habit that may be pulling your heart away from Jesus?
Today’s Practice
Set aside one specific block of time today, even a small one, just to be with Jesus.
Day 28: Return After Drifting
Scripture Reading
Revelation 2:4-5 — Jesus calls His people to return to the love they had at first.
Devotional
Drifting often happens quietly.
You may still believe.
You may still know the right words.
You may still attend church, serve, pray occasionally, and look fine on the outside.
But inside, your affection has cooled.
Your hunger has faded.
Your prayers have become rare or rushed.
Your heart feels distant.
Jesus cares about first love.
Not only outward activity.
Not only correct behavior.
Love.
When He calls His people to return, it is not because He enjoys exposing failure. It is because He wants the heart back.
Seeking Jesus first means responding when you realize you have drifted.
Do not waste energy pretending you have not.
Do not let shame keep you away.
Do not assume distance has to become permanent.
Return.
Return to prayer.
Return to the Word.
Return to surrender.
Return to honest worship.
Return to simple love for Jesus.
The way back may be simpler than you think.
Not easy, but simple.
Turn toward Him again.
He is worthy of your first love.
Prayer
Jesus, I return to You. Forgive me for the ways my heart has drifted. I do not want to only look faithful on the outside while growing cold within. Restore my first love. Draw my heart close again. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
Where has your love for Jesus grown distracted, cold, or secondary?
Today’s Practice
Pray honestly: “Jesus, I return to my first love.” Then take one step that reflects that return.
Day 29: Follow Jesus One Day at a Time
Scripture Reading
Matthew 6:34 — Jesus tells us not to be anxious about tomorrow.
Devotional
Sometimes the future feels too big.
You wonder how you will stay faithful.
How you will handle what is coming.
How you will keep trusting.
How you will change.
How you will endure.
But Jesus often gives grace for today before He gives clarity for tomorrow.
Seeking Him first is daily.
Daily bread.
Daily surrender.
Daily obedience.
Daily mercy.
Daily following.
This does not mean you never plan. Wisdom plans. But anxiety tries to live tomorrow before it arrives.
Jesus brings you back to today.
What does faithfulness look like today?
What does trust look like today?
What does obedience look like today?
What does seeking Him first look like today?
You may not know how God will provide for every future need, but you can trust Him with the next step.
You may not know how He will finish the work He started in you, but you can follow Him today.
Do not carry thirty years of worries on one day’s shoulders.
Jesus is with you now.
Follow Him now.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me follow You one day at a time. I give You my fears about tomorrow. Show me what faithfulness looks like today. Give me daily grace, daily trust, and daily obedience. Keep me close to You in this moment. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
What future concern are you trying to carry before its time?
Today’s Practice
Ask Jesus: “What is today’s next faithful step?” Then take that step.
Day 30: Keep Seeking Jesus First
Scripture Reading
Philippians 3:8-14 — Paul speaks of knowing Christ, pressing on, and pursuing the goal before him.
Devotional
You have reached Day 30, but seeking Jesus first does not end here.
This devotional was never meant to be a finish line.
It is a doorway.
A reset.
A reminder.
An invitation to keep going.
There will still be days when your heart feels strong and days when it feels weak.
Days when prayer feels natural and days when it feels difficult.
Days when you obey quickly and days when you need to repent and return.
Do not build your confidence on the idea that you will never struggle again.
Build your confidence on Jesus.
He is faithful.
He is worthy.
He is patient.
He is Lord.
He is better than what competes for first place.
Paul did not speak as someone who had already arrived. He pressed on because Christ had taken hold of him.
That is your hope too.
You seek Jesus because He first sought you.
You hold on because He is holding you.
You press on because His grace is still working in you.
So keep seeking Him.
In the morning.
In decisions.
In anxiety.
In relationships.
In work.
In weakness.
In obedience.
In repentance.
In joy.
In waiting.
In every ordinary day.
Jesus is not a habit to complete.
He is the treasure of your life.
Seek Him first again.
And then tomorrow, seek Him first again.
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for meeting me through these thirty days. I do not want to stop here. Keep drawing my heart back to You. Be first in my life, not just in words, but in my desires, decisions, thoughts, time, relationships, and obedience. I press on because You have taken hold of me. Amen.
Question for Your Heart
What has Jesus shown you during these thirty days, and how is He inviting you to continue?
Today’s Practice
Write a simple commitment prayer in your own words: “Jesus, help me keep seeking You first by…”
Closing Prayer for the 30 Days
Lord Jesus,
You are worthy of first place.
Not only in my schedule, but in my heart.
Not only in my words, but in my desires.
Not only in my prayers, but in my decisions.
Not only when life is peaceful, but when life is confusing, busy, painful, or uncertain.
Teach me to seek You first with sincerity.
When I drift, call me back.
When I worry, teach me to trust.
When I strive, teach me to abide.
When I sin, lead me to repentance.
When I feel condemned, remind me of grace.
When I feel weak, strengthen me by Your Spirit.
When I am tempted to chase the world, remind me that You are better.
When I want control, teach me surrender.
When I want approval, teach me to live before You.
When I do not know what to do, give me wisdom.
When I feel far from You, draw me near again.
Jesus, be my first love.
Be my daily bread.
Be my Shepherd.
Be my peace.
Be my Lord.
I do not want a faith that only looks spiritual on the outside. I want a real relationship with You. I want a surrendered heart. I want a life that says, again and again, “Not my will, but Yours be done.”
Help me seek You first today.
And tomorrow.
And every day after that.
Amen.
A Simple Daily Prayer to Continue
Jesus, be first in me today.
Before my worry, be my peace.
Before my plans, be my wisdom.
Before my desires, be my treasure.
Before my reactions, be my guide.
Before my work, be my strength.
Before my obedience, be my grace.
Before anything else, remind me that I belong to You.
I seek You first again.
Amen.
